Dans l’antiquit\u00e9 tardive, entre le IVe et le Ve si\u00e8cle apr\u00e8s J.C.<\/strong>, lors du d\u00e9clin de l\u2019empire romain, fut cr\u00e9\u00e9e une mansio<\/strong>, un centre organis\u00e9 pour accueillir les voyageurs qui naviguaient sur le r\u00e9seau interne prot\u00e9g\u00e9 par les canaux de la lagune reliant les principaux centres de l\u2019arc Adriatique, de Ravenne \u00e0 Aquileia. Les campagnes de fouille r\u00e9alis\u00e9es entre 2013 et 2016 ont d\u00e9couvert de nombreuses structures articul\u00e9es, dont:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • un grand \u00e9difice<\/strong> servant \u00e0 l\u2019accueil des voyageurs (militaires et marchands) : une maison d’h\u00f4te ou une auberge, comme nous l’appellerions de nos jours, caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par une s\u00e9rie de pi\u00e8ces toutes identiques, l\u2019une \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l\u2019autre, qui devaient abriter les chambres et les cuisines (chaque pi\u00e8ce \u00e9tait pourvue d\u2019un foyer en brique).<\/li>\n
  • Une s\u00e9rie de d\u00e9p\u00f4ts et d\u2019ateliers<\/strong> pour travailler le fer et l\u2019os.<\/li>\n
  • Traces d\u2019\u00e9difices plus pris\u00e9s,<\/strong> d\u00e9cor\u00e9s avec des carreaux de marbre, probablement vou\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019accueil de personnalit\u00e9s et de hauts fonctionnaires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, Equilo jouissait d\u2019une \u00e9conomie florissante<\/strong>, li\u00e9e aux ressources et aux mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res disponibles dans la lagune (poisson, sel) et au r\u00e9seau consolid\u00e9 de commerces tant \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle, avec des importations du Proche-Orient et de l’Afrique du Nord, qu’\u00e0 petite et moyenne distance, avec des produits distribu\u00e9s localement et r\u00e9gional.
